On 20 November 2025 was published the edited volume Transmedia in Translation and Transculturation, edited by Vasso Giannakopoulou (University of Cyprus) and Elin Sütiste (University of Tartu). The book was released by John Benjamins Publishing Company.

We invite authors to submit paper abstracts for the conference “Crisis & Recovery: Ethics in Interdisciplinary Dialogue,” which will take place on 20–23 August 2026 at the University of Tartu.

University of Tartu semioticians Andreas Ventsel and Mari-Liis Madisson, along with Junior Research Fellow in Information Resilience Diana Poudel, have developed tools for enhancing critical digital literacy in cooperation with international partners. The practical materials are designed for use in higher education, schools, companies and organisations to support navigating the digital landscape and countering the spread of disinformation.

In September 2024, the Philosophy Department launched a special issue of Studia Philosophica Estonica on the Russia-Ukraine War, edited by Aaron James Wendland. The issue aimed to deepen global moral, cultural, and political understanding of the conflict while also keeping it in public discourse. We are thrilled that this public philosophy project has been featured in over 25 news outlets worldwide.

In the summer, two large book donations were made to the University of Tartu Library, adding to its existing collection of books on the classical and early modern periods.

The discussion game developed by researchers at the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu has received a remake – the game is now available in English.

On October 3, Daria Arkhipova defended her doctoral thesis "How Artificial Intelligence Recommendation Systems Impact Human Decision-Making" in semiotics and culture studies with cum laude at the joint committee of the University of Tartu and the University of Turin.

In the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the academic peer-reviewed journal Studia Philosophica Estonica has launched a groundbreaking special public edition, “Reflections on the Russia-Ukraine War”. It is the first issue of a philosophy journal to exclusively cover Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The renowned public intellectuals and distinguished scholars who contribute to this volume have written essays that combine rigorous academic analysis of the conflict with an accessible and engaging style. As a result, this special issue on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine offers insight that will resonate with professional academics and the general public alike.
