How can we include voices, personal worlds, and personalities of non-human animals in artistic and literary works? How would this help us to understand and appreciate non-human species better? To seek answers to these questions, the public discussion event "How to involve other species?" will be organised as a part of the Prima Vista festival programme.
In an open discussion, artist Uku Sepsivart and writer David Hartley (UK) will introduce their creative work. Uku Sepsivart is an Estonian artist well known for his sculptures incorporating bees, birds, and other animals as co-authors. David Hartley is the author of the prized book "Fauna" (2021). His short stories mix human and animal features and fates in the most unexpected ways.
The discussion will be moderated by semiotician and poet Timo Maran, and curator and Francophone literature scholar Sara Bédard-Goulet.
The discussion is a pre-event of the "Poetics of Survival" project, which is part of the Prima Vista literary festival "Better and Worse Futures" in the framework of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024. Estonian Research Council supports the event via the project "Meanings of endangered species in culture: ecology, semiotic modelling and reception".
