The new double issue of Sign Systems Studies (Vol. 54, Nos. 1–2) was recently published. The special issue “Learning in Transformation” was guest edited by Maarja Ojamaa and Tiit Remm.

Learning is a central thread running through the articles, which examine edusemiotics, communities of inquiry, foreign-language learning, and the relationship between semiotics and teaching, approaching learning as a communicative, cultural, and meaning-making process that extends beyond formal education.

Through its focus on learning, the issue brings together a wider range of semiotic research. A translation of Ivar Kull’s 1965 article highlights the mathematical side of Tartu semiotics; a study of communication in the correspondence between Juri Lotman and Boris Egorov explores writing; and an exploration of irreducibility in semiosis is undertaken through images. Reviews and notes address learning and education in Tartu semiotics, the history of the field, and a recent rereading of Ferdinand de Saussure.
