On 27 October at 14:15 Nikolai Shurakov will defend his doctoral thesis "Experimental Contribution to Contemporary Ordinary Language Philosophy" for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Philosophy).

The University of Tartu and Tallinn Health University of Applied Sciences have strengthened cooperation in intersectoral doctoral studies to support academic succession at the professional higher education institution and enhance its research capacity. In September, the first intersectoral doctoral researcher began their studies in the collaboration between the two institutions.

On October 8, 2025, the candidates for the Professorship of the Semiotics of Culture at the University of Tartu – Maarja Ojamaa, Sara Bédard-Goulet, and Mari-Liis Madisson – delivered their venia legendi lectures. A new special issue of the journal Sign Systems Studies, volume 53 (1/2), has been published. The issue is dedicated to the French philosophers Deleuze, Guattari, and semiotics. The issue was compiled and edited by Ott Puumeister, Research Fellow in Semiotics.

On 13 October at 14:15 Krista Simson will defend her doctoral thesis "Visuaalkunsti väljendusvahendid semiootilise analüüsi kontekstis" ("Means of Expression in Visual Art in the Context of Semiotic Analysis") for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Semiotics and Culture Studies).

This year the Paulson Lectures in the Study of Religion will be held by Kevin Schilbrack. He is an internationally renown scholar of methodological and theoretical issues in study of religion.

In connection with an upcoming exhibition on Voltaire at the University of Tartu’s Museum of Art, and in collaboration with the Voltaire Foundation, University of Oxford, international conference "Voltaire in the Baltic World: Circulations, Receptions, Legacies" will be held on 5-6 March 2026 at the University of Tartu, Estonia. The conference is held in partnership with the Voltaire Foundation, University of Oxford.

On 25–26 September 2025, the University of Tartu will host international scholars of ancient philosophy. This year’s Tartu Workshop in Ancient Philosophy focuses on ancient philosophers’ views on women, but other topics will be discussed as well. The workshop is organised by Riin Sirkel, Associate Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Tartu.
