Applications are now open for the international master’s programmes in Semiotics and in Philosophy in Practice at the University of Tartu. Prospective students can apply until 15 March. Interested applicants are also warmly invited to our virtual open day on 15 January 2026, where you can learn more about the programmes, admissions, and studying in Tartu.

What's new?
Study with no tuition fee or with a reduction

From this admission cycle, our international master’s programmes are financially more accessible:

  • No tuition fee for EU/EEA students – applicants from EU/EEA countries do not need to pay tuition for our master’s programmes
  • Tuition fee reduction for non-EU/EEA students – each year, two students per our master's programme from outside the EU/EEA are eligible for a 25% tuition fee reduction, starting from the spring semester.

This update is part of the University of Tartu’s wider initiative to support international master’s students and make high-quality education more accessible.

A profoundly renewed master’s programme in philosophy

Our international master’s programme in philosophy has undergone a comprehensive renewal and, from 2026, will officially carry the new name Philosophy in Practice. The updated curriculum is designed to prepare students for tackling real-world challenges using philosophical reasoning and skills.

The programme offers students:

  • training in analytical, argumentation, and communication skills that are essential for addressing complex problems across sectors, from ethical debates to policy decisions, legal reasoning, technology and media, to organisational strategy, public communication and governance;
  • courses that connect philosophy directly with contemporary social and global issues, such as political philosophy, wellbeing and health, applied epistemology, and broader societal challenges;
  • opportunities to broaden expertise with interdisciplinary study, including skills and knowledge from law, information technology, politics and other fields;
  • a built-in practice placement and research project, enabling students to apply their skills in real contexts and workplaces.

Graduates emerge with the capability to contribute meaningfully in academic and non-academic careers — including policy, consulting, media, organisational roles, ethics advisory, and beyond — wherever rigorous philosophical thinking and practical application are valued.

About the MA in Semiotics

The international Master’s programme in Semiotics offers a strong foundation in the study of meaning, communication, and sign systems across culture, society, and nature. It builds on the long-standing semiotic tradition of the University of Tartu, one of the world’s leading centres for semiotic research.

The programme offers students:

  • a solid grounding in the history, theory, and methods of semiotics,
  • in-depth specialisation in three branches of semiotics: semiotics of culture, sociosemiotics, and biosemiotics, with the flexibility to focus on one or combine several areas,
  • a wide choice of elective courses, including topic- and author-focused seminars, courses taught by visiting professors, and classes exploring emerging research directions,
  • strong analytical and interpretative skills applicable both in academia and beyond.
